Government projects Division

“sithuthukisa izinga lempilo enhle yangasese emphakathini” - “We raise the standard of sanitation in our communities”

This division specialises in providing sanitation to Government sponsored projects such as Informal settlements where there is no proper sanitation facilities in place.

Conditions in the informal settlements:
The government has made the extension of basic services to those previously denied access a priority. Among the most basic and critical of these is the access to clean water and sanitation services by citizens.

However, not everyone has even this minimum of access, and there are many people without water and sanitation services in the informal settlements across the country.

Sanitech realises the challenges that face our government because of the ever growing numbers of informal settlements and seeks to provide quality service for the government and the communities in which we operate.

Why portable toilets as a solution?

The standard minimum sanitation requirements specified by the Water Services Act (Act 108 of 1997) is at least a ventilated improved pit latrine (VIP) or equivalent. However, VIP toilets create hazardous conditions in most informal settlements because:

- Different soil conditions present several challenges for the installation of
- VIP toilets, eg:
- High rock and clay content, dolomite and unstable soil conditions
- They contaminate ground water resulting in environmental pollution
- The toilets fill up quickly in a matter of months as opposed to the years
- which were estimated ie: +-15years. It is difficult to remove the waste
- because people dump rocks and all sorts of solids. The servicing of these toilets
- then becomes a major expense
- Risk of small children falling in the pits

Portable chemical toilets on the other hand are advantageous because:

- Chemical toilets can be installed, removed or repaired quickly in any environment
- They are serviced and cleaned at least once a week
- Chemicals control odour
- Job creation for the community members through the maintenance of toilets
- Temporary and flexibility, that allows government to plan and put proper infrastructure whilst communities are not deprived of
- their basic human right
- The use of high capacity vacuum tankers ensures safe removal, transportation and disposal of waste.
